JOB TITLE: High School Science Teacher (General)

REPORTS TOPrincipal/Assistant Principal

This is a 0.8 FTE position. 

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION 

A High School Science Teacher at North Andover High School (NAHS) is a professional educator dedicated to fostering scientific literacy, critical thinking, and a passion for inquiry within a rigorous academic environment. The role involves delivering high-quality instruction aligned with the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) Frameworks while supporting the school's mission of cultivating "insightful thinkers and effective communicators."

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Instructional Design & Delivery
  • Curriculum Alignment: Develop and implement lesson plans that align with the MA STE standards and the NAHS curriculum guides.
  • Inquiry-Based Learning: Facilitate hands-on laboratory experiences, demonstrations, and research projects that emphasize the scientific method and engineering design process.
  • Differentiation: Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles, including the use of Sheltered English Instruction (SEI) strategies for English Learners and modifications for students with IEPs or 504 plans.
  • Technology Integration: Utilize modern laboratory equipment and educational technology to enhance student engagement and data analysis.
  1. Assessment & Data Analysis
  • Formative & Summative Evaluation: Design diverse assessment tools (lab reports, projects, exams) to monitor student progress.
  • Data-Driven Instruction: Analyze student performance data to identify learning gaps and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
  • Grading: Maintain accurate records of student achievement in accordance with the NAHS semester-based grading system.
  1. Classroom Management & Environment
  • Safety Standards: Strictly adhere to and enforce OSHA and district safety protocols for laboratory settings, including the proper handling and disposal of chemicals/biological materials.
  • Inclusive Climate: Foster a respectful, culturally responsive, and safe learning environment where students feel comfortable taking academic risks.
  1. Professional Collaboration
  • Departmental Synergy: Work with the Science Department to coordinate curriculum, share best practices, and participate in interdisciplinary units.
  • Community Engagement: Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and participate in school-wide events like Open Houses.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a specific science discipline. Master's degree preferred.

Licensure

Valid Massachusetts DESE Certification in the relevant subject area (e.g. Chemistry 8-12).

Clearances

Successful completion of CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and fingerprint-based background checks.

Skills

Strong classroom management, proficiency in educational software, and a commitment to social-emotional learning (SEL).

 

WORKING CONDITIONS  

Working in a school setting. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy indoor environment with work inside about 85% of the time and work outside about 15% of the work schedule. Ability to stand/sit and/or squat for extended periods of time. Perform other duties that may be assigned.

As negotiated by the North Andover School Committee and the North Andover Teachers Association.
